In the case of recordings containing more than one work by Leighton, I repeat the entry under the title of each work for convenience of use, but I usually give the full list of couplings only the first time a recording is listed, with references to that listing elsewhere. List the names of the performers, the title of the album, and the couplings. For each recording, I provide recording company, number, date, and format.
Following each work title is a series of recordings that contain it, arranged chronologically. Following the Works and First Performances is a Discography, again arranged alphabetically by title of composition. References to the Bibliography appear on a line beginning with 'SEE:', and each is the number of an item in the Bibliography, beginning with 4B\ These lines are omitted for works for which there are no recordings or no associated bibliography references. Discography references, which appear on a line beginning with the tag 'RECORDINGS:', are the numbers of entries in the Discography, that is, numbers prefixed with 'D'. Following this information there are (in most cases) two lists of references, one to the Discography and one to the Bibliography. Each entry consists of a description of the work (instrumentation, etc.) information concerning its date of composition, first performance (if known), publication (if published), and location of its manuscript, to the extent that I have been able to determine them. Entries are arranged alphabetically by title of work, and each entry is assigned an identifying number prefixed with CW\ In listing the titles of works, I append the opus number where one has been assigned, and otherwise I give the year of composition in parentheses. This section has an entry for each of Leighton's compositions. A brief biography of Kenneth Leighton, concentrating on his development as a composer and the history of his compositions. I personally have many friends from Stillwater who are continuing to make great choral music, due in part to the work of Dr. He has been teaching at the Stillwater Area Schools since 1974 and has been instrumental in making Sillwater one of the top choral districts in the state, and arguably the country. He has taught at Southeastern Louisiana University, Capital University, and his alma mater, Concordia College. Christiansen attended Concordia College, Moorhead and went on to receive his DMA at Arizona State University. Christiansen is a crucial part of this process, and has been responsible for developing the voices of countless young students.ĭr.
The truth is, high schools, middle schools, community children's choirs, and church choirs are instrumental in training these young voices long before colleges or professional choirs get a hold of the singers. But where does this talent come from? Who cultivates the choral sound, the voice, and technique? We know about our wonderful choirs from the many great collegiate institutions, and our professional/semi-professional ensembles such as VocalEssence, Cantus, The Singers, National Lutheran Choir, etc. However, his influence is far greater than we might immediately grasp. Melius Christiansen and one of several Christiansen family choral figures responsible for the deep choral tradition we have here in Minnesota.
Erik Christiansen is the grandson of the great F. As part of our Voices of Spring Choral Month, we've asked prominent voices in the Minnesota choral community to tell us their top 10 choral pieces so we could share them with you!ĭr.
